EFL League Two

Lincoln City 2-0 Oldham Athletic

Oldham’s winless run stretched to six matches with a 2-0 defeat at league leaders Lincoln City.

Paul Scholes’ side fell behind on the half hour mark when Harry Toffolo burst into the box and finished emphatically past Daniel Iversen in goal. Oldham’s job to level matters was made even harder when Jose Baxter was red carded for a nasty challenge on Harry Anderson just before the interval. And the Imps, who have increased their lead at the top by five points with victory, put the game to bed in the 58th minute when Ipswich Town loanee Danny Rowe curled a brilliant effort into the top corner.

The result sees Oldham drop to 14th in the table ahead of Saturday’s home clash against Tranmere Rovers, who are currently fifth in the table and chasing an automatic promotion spot.

Despite the loss, Oldham started the game well and had the better chances in the opening stages. Lincoln goalkeeper Matt Gilks, formerly of Premier League status with Blackpool, was forced into decent saves from Baxter and Mohamed Maouche.

Lincoln took heed of the early warning signs and took the game to Oldham in their quest to preserve their 13 game unbeaten run. Tom Pett forced Iversen into a good stop before John Akinde was left red faced after blasting over from two yards.

The hosts continued to pressure and their efforts were rewarded in the 30th minute when a neat exchange between Toffolo and Mark O’Hara ended with the former slotting home inside the box.

Latics’ hopes of finding an equaliser were all but killed when Baxter was red carded in the 43rd minute for a needless lunge on Anderson.

Lincoln capitalised on the one man advantage in the second half and scored the decisive goal in the 58th minute. Rowe found time and space before curling an effort into the top corner to send the 8,200 home supporters into raptures.

Had it not been for a number of impressive saves from Iversen, Lincoln could have extended their lead further. However, the hosts settled for the 2-0 victory and now look set for automatic promotion.
