A Chadderton Primary School need your vote to help them raise money for an outdoor play area.

Whitegate End Primary School are competing for funding from the Aviva Community Fund with the recipients of the funding winning through a public vote.

Member of the PTFA, Claire Eccles-Waters, said: “We are the only school in Oldham competing this year, but out of 625 projects only the top 40 get funding. We have a really good chance of getting into the top 40, but we need as much help as we can get.”

Currently the school has no fixed play equipment and want to change this with an outdoor gym.

Claire continued: “The purpose of the gym would be to encourage exercise in the fresh air which would be fun, improve teamwork, fitness, stimulate mental wellbeing, deliver oxygen and Vitamin D, not to mention the sense of achievement the children will have.”

The gym would be used in a variety of ways including at break time, PE lessons, afterschool clubs and holiday clubs which include community from outside of the school too.

Equipment would include an Air Walker, Air Skier, a children’s rider plus leg, press, chest and shoulder press and a chin up bar.

The school have already raised £5000 of the £10,000 needed for the outdoor area and the grant from Aviva will allow them to realise their dream within a much shorter time period.

Claire said: “Unfortunately Oldham has a high rate of deprivation. Oldham residents have worse health, lower life expectancy and a significantly higher percentage of overweight children than the rest of the country. By giving our pupils daily access to gym equipment we hope to reverse this trend by making exercise a part of normal daily activity. Over 200 children will benefit as well as hundreds of children for years to come.”

Voting closes November 20, to vote click here.
