Alexandra Park Junior School are taking part in their own Peace Week which launched on Monday with the help of the Worshipful Mayor of Oldham.

PHSE Co-ordinator, Samantha Nicholson Hickling, said: “It started out as just a day to coincide with the International Day of Peace on Friday, but being the community that Oldham is we had so many kind offers to come and help us out and do things with the children that we decided to make it a week.”

The week began with an assembly attended by the Mayor of Oldham Cllr Javid Iqbal who spoke to the children and took questions.

He said: “I’m delighted to be invited today, this is my first school assembly as Mayor which is absolutely wonderful. I have great memories of this area.

“If we work together we can have peace and harmony. With peace and harmony we can actively go forward to a safer and better world. We can all do our bit to help and help each other to aspire to inspire.”

Also at the assembly was Peace Talks Oldham who stayed to work with Year 6 to create art which will go in Gallery Oldham for the public to see.

Pupils will also create a peace wall by each decorating their own brick, make peace paperchains and welcome Laura Topper from Ommaysing Me who teaches workshops around the UK called Peace Begins with Me.

Samantha added: “We have our peace bears that the children take home to think about peace outside of school, they fill in their diaries and write how they had a peaceful week. We are also relaunching our Classroom Peace Ambassadors who look after our peace in our school.

“Hopefully it will give our new pupils a really good start with us, they will get the message of what our school is about and it will also be a nice reminder for our older children.”
