Police are investigating a man with a gun fired blank shots in Oldham yesterday.

Just after 11.50pm, the man was seen with a gun on Waltham Street in Alexandra. He fired the gun aimlessly a number of times before walking off in the direction of Roundthorn Road.

Officers attended the scene and recovered blank cartridges, suggesting no bullets were fired.

The man is described as white and aged between 60-70. He was wearing a long, green, fishing-style coat, a trilby hat and he had a silver walking stick with a grey handle.

Detective Inspector Ian Harratt, from GMP’s Oldham borough, said: “At the time this incident understandably caused concern to residents and when officers attended we immediately searched the area.

“What we have recovered suggests that no bullets were fired and there was no direct threat to the public. However, we need to identify this man to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

“If this was you or you have information about this incident, then please call us at the first opportunity.”
